PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a prophylactic or a therapeutic for a variety of diseases relating to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPAR) (an intranuclear transcription factor) by activating the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorαorγas an intranuclear transcription factor. SOLUTION: A benzothiophene derivative represented by the following general formula is used as an active ingredient to produce the ob-jective medicine. The compound of this invention has the high ability to activate PPARαorγ, shows low toxicity and good oral absorption, thus can be expected that they will be useful as a prophylactic or a therapeutic for a variety of diseases to which the activation of PPARαorγparticipates.
