PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous emulsion high in viscosity and excellent in water resistance and adhesivity to woody materials, and to provide an adhesive for woodworking use comprising the above emulsion. SOLUTION: This aqueous emulsion comprises a polymer composed of vinyl ester-based monomer unit as dispersoid and, as dispersant, a composition comprising (A) a vinyl alcohol-based polymer containing 0.5-10 mol% of ethylene unit and having a saponification degree X of >=95% and (B) a second vinyl alcohol- based polymer 75-95 mol% in saponification degree Y and satisfying the relationship: X-Y>=0.5 mol%. The other objective adhesive for woodworking use comprises the above aqueous emulsion.
