PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording. SOLUTION: An inorganic compound film 2, a magnetic film 3, a protective film 4 and a lubrication film 5 are formed on a substrate 1. The grains, constituting the inorganic compound film 2 consist of Co3O4 (spinel type) with solid solution of Si and Ti, and the intergranular phase consists of an amorphous oxide consisting of Co, Si, Ti and O. Since the crystal grains have a uniform grain size and are adjacent to each other with an intergranular phase, having a considerably smaller volume than the crystal grains, the inorganic compound film has a densely packed structure of crystal grains each in a hexagonal form. The grain size distribution of the crystal grains in the magnetic film 3 is almost coincident with the grain size distribution of the crystal grains in the inorganic compound film 2.
