PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing polyolefin-based short fibers which have excellent mixability with natural pulp. SOLUTION: This method for producing hydrophilic polyolefin-based short fibers comprises melting and kneading a polyolefin with an acid-modified polyolefin in the front portion of an extruder, adding the aqueous solution of a surfactant to the melted and kneaded product in the middle portion of the extruder, continuously kneading the mixture in the rear portion of the extruder until the added aqueous solution is homogeneously dispersed, drying the water-containing ultra fine bundle obtained from the exit of the extruder until to give a water content of <=4 wt.%, and then simultaneously adding a shear force and an impact force to the dried ultra fine fiber bundle to crush the fiber bundle into the short fibers having an average fiber length of <=2.5 mm.
