A process for the isomerization of 1,4-dichloro-2-butene to 3,4-dichloro-1-butene or of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene to 1,4-dichloro-2-butene is carried out in the presence of an iron cyclopentadiene-carbonyl complex catalyst. A process for the isomerization of 1,4-dichloro-2-butene to 3,4-dichloro-1-butene or of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene to 1,4-dichloro-2-butene is carried out in the presence of an iron catalyst of formula CpFe(CO)2X (1); Cp : a cyclopentadienyl derivative of formula (2), R1>-R5>H, 1-12C alkyl, 5-8C cycloalkyl optionally substituted by 1-12C alkyl, 6-14C aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl whereby two neighboring groups optionally form 3-14C cyclic groups, optionally unsaturated or -SiR6>R7>R8>; R6>, R7>1-4C alkyl, 5-8C cycloalkyl or 6-14C aryl; X : F, Cl, Br or I.
