Diacetyl compounds of formula in which n represents a whole number from 1 to 10, are prepared by treating tetrahydrofuran with acetic anhydride in the presence as a catalyst of an aluminium hydrosilicate or an aluminium magnesium hydrosilicate of the montmorillonite type and which may be activated by an acid. Examples describe the preparation of tributylene glycol and tetrabutylene glycol di-acetates and the process may be batchwise or continuous. |
