The bearing (1) consists of an outer ring (4) and an inner ring (6) with a row of balls (8) between their ball races and a clearance ring (9) to ensure that the inner ring makes contact with the steering column shaft. It incorporates a damper (12) of a supple and synthetic or rubber-based material with an optional inner metal reinforcing element, in contact with the clearance ring at the opposite end of the bearing to the balls. A variant has a braking ring to lock the bearing axially on the steering column shaft, with the damper located between the braking ring and clearance ring.
