Liquid to be centrifuged is fed from a hopper 42, Fig. 2, down a rotating shaft 21 and passes through slots 21a in the shaft into spiral grooves 23a, Fig. 6, in the underside of each of a number of plates 23. It filters downwards through filter papers resting on the plates, the filtrate passing along grooves 22a, 22b, Fig. 5 on the upper surfaces of the plates. which communicate with outlets 22c. The filtrate is thus received in the casing 31 and is discharged at 32. The plates 23 are clamped together by weights 29 acting through a leverage device; as the speed of rotation increases, the weights -move outwards and the clamping ,pressure is .increased. In .Fig. 9, (not shown), the plates (23) are replaced by plates having the cross-section shown in Fig. 12, where-grooves B communicate with annular grooves C connected to holes A by holes D. The plates are covered with filter paper on both sides, and are spaced for entry of liquid to be centrifuged by peripheral spacers having perforations communicating with the holes A. In Fig. 2, when the motor, 13 for driving the shaft 21 is deenergized, an electro-magnet 56 is also de-energized, thereby permitting a spring (not shown) to apply a brake band 53 to a brake drum 52 to stop the motor. |
