Masking material in sheet or roll form for protecting lacquered plastic automobile body parts comprises a flexible backing of ultraviolet-resistant material coated with a polyisobutylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) adhesive. Masking material in sheet or roll form for protecting lacquered plastic automobile body parts comprises an optionally primed flexible backing of ultraviolet-resistant material coated with a polyisobutylene or EVA adhesive, where: (a) the polyisobutylene adhesive comprises a mixture of polyisobutylenes with molecular weights of 5000-100,000 without added (meth)acrylate or styrene polymers; (b) the adhesive does not react with the lacquered surface and is light-, ultraviolet- and weather-resistant; and (c) the masking material is impermeable to air and water vapor, has a thickness of at least 0.1 mm, has an adhesion to steel according to AFERA 4001 of at least 1 N/cm (measured as 180 deg pull-off force), does not alter the masked lacquered surface and is easily removed from this surface.
