A fluorescent material characterized by comprising a cyclic phenol sulfide selected among a thiacalixarene, sulfinyl thiacalixarene, and sulfonyl thiacalixarene which are represented by the formula (1) and, associated with the sulfide, a rare earth metal ion (wherein X is S, SO, or SO>2<; n is an integer of 4 to 6; and Y's may be the same or different and each is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, a halogenohydrocarbon group, -COR?1>, -OR<2>, -COOR<3>, -CN, -CONH2, -NO2, -NR<4>R<5>, halogeno, -SO4R<6>, or -SO3R<7>, wherein R<1> to R<5> each is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group and R<6> and R<7> each is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, or a metal); and a fluorescent material composition obtained by dispersing or dissolving the fluorescent material in a medium.
