Mattresses are formed in a continuous length by applying a layer of plastics sponge 24, 24a to one or both ends of a pre-arranged layer of springs 1, polymerising the sponge material, and cutting the continuous length into desired mattress lengths. Coil springs 1 are first positioned in a pre-determined distribution on studs 11 carried by an endless conveyer 6 and are conveyed through a first station in which the springs 1 are tied by strings in a compressed condition. A layer of jute 14 is then applied over the springs 1 before they are carried over a reversing roller 8 to pass horizontally along the lower run of the conveyer 6. Adjacent the roller 8 sponge material 24 is injected by nozzles 17 on to a moving strip 25 of silicone treated paper which carries the sponge layer 24 parallel to the jute covered spring layer so that the jute and the ends of the springs 1 become embedded in the sponge layer 24 which is polymerized in its run between the rollers 8, 9. The continuous length of mattress is then passed around a reversing roller and has further layers of jute 29 and plastics sponge 24a applied to the opposite ends of the springs. The continuous strip then passes through a kiln 33 to ensure final polymerization of the sponge layers. At subsequent stations (Fig. 3, not shown) the continuous length is cut by knives or saws 34 into desired mattress lengths 36 which pass to stations 37, 38 at which the compressing strings are cut. Further stations include an optional mattress compressing station 45, a station 39 at which the mattresses are inserted into a cover bag, packing stations 42, 43 and a discharge track 44. The springs may be blade springs. In an alternative arrangement, no cover bag is provided. In this case the silicone paper strips 25, 25a are replaced by plasticized fabric strips which remain adhered to the sponge layers and thus provide a cover for these layers. |
