PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a yoke type magnetoresistive head having excellent reproducing efficiency and to provide a method for manufacturing the head. SOLUTION: The yoke type magnetoresistive head 1 having a magnetic gap 9 between an upper yoke 10 and a lower yoke 7 and a magnetic circuit constituted of at least the lower yoke 7 having a yoke gap G, the upper yoke 10 and a magnetoresistive element 4 provided at the position corresponding to the yoke gap G comprises a pair of auxiliary yokes 3 and 3 having a gap which are so disposed that both ends of the magnetoresistive element 4 come into contact with the auxiliary yokes or one end of the magnetoresistive element 4 comes into contact with the auxiliary yoke and the other end is slightly separated from the yoke.
