PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser operating apparatus, and its operating method, which is small-sized, low-cost, evades influence of modal hopping noise surely, and to obtain an image forming apparatus which forms high-quality picture images. SOLUTION: After ATC(Automatic Temperature Control and APC(Automatic Power Control) are performed (Steps 200, 202), the temperature of a laser diode(LD) is increased by 0.1 degree each time from a specified temperature, and the LD is operated using a specified image data. The quantity of light corresponding to a specified number of lines is acquired at each temperature for each image line. When the rate of the quantity of light outside a permissible error range out of the quantity of light corresponding to the specified number of lines at each temperature is not larger than 5%, and this state continues a specified number of times, the temperature at this time is stored (Steps 204-218) as a temperature for temperature adjustment of the LD. This adjusting temperature storage is performed for all LDs.
