PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas pipe used for a chimney of a thermal power plant and the like and the method of exhausting gas therefor, which are suitable for reducing the number of parts and costs covering manufacturing, installation and further maintenance. SOLUTION: The exhaust gas pipe comprises caliber adjusting means provided around the upper opening thereof for adjusting the same, which means is designed to be switchable such that it secures a large opening area for the exhaust gas pipe at open position and forms a narrow opening area at closed position to constitute the caliber-adjusting-type exhaust gas pipe. Exhaust gas can be collected to a single exhaust gas pipe from a plurality of boilers by using the exhaust gas pipe while operating the caliber adjusting means in accordance with the resting states of the boilers to switch the opening areas thereof, thereby attaining a large cost reduction through integration and simplification of facilities, simplification of operation, and the like.
