Wood, optionally impregnated with a zinc-free preservative comprising different group Ib and/or IIb metal(s), is preserved by a two-stage procedure comprising initial impregnation with a preservative containing zinc compounds and subsequent impregnation (fixation) with an aqueous solution of a trimercapto-s-triazine salt, dithiocarbaminate or trithiocarbamate. Preservation of wood comprises: (a) impregnating wood with a preservative containing a water-soluble zinc compound; or (b) impregnation of wood, which has already been impregnated with a zinc-free preservative containing at least one group Ib and/or IIb metal, with a second preservative containing at least one water-soluble zinc compound; and (c) impregnation of the wood obtained from (a) or (b) with an aqueous solution of a trimercapto-s-triazine (TMT) salt, dithiocarbaminate or trithiocarbamate in order to fix the zinc and optionally other metal.
