摘要 Hypohalites may be produced by the reaction of a metal oxide with a halogen in the presence of water, the metal oxide being magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, calcium oxide, silver oxide or copper oxide.ALSO:1,1,1-Trihalo-2-ketones are prepared by reacting a 1-halo-2-ketone or a 1,1-dihalo-2-ketone with a hypohalite in a liquid medium in which hypohalite ions can be formed at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 70 DEG C. while maintaining the pH of the reaction mixture from 6 to 10. The medium is preferably aqueous. The hypohalite may be present as such or may be produced in situ. Examples are given. Ketones of various degrees of halogenation are obtained as by-products. Chloroform is obtained as a by-product when 1-chloroacetone or 1,1-dichloroacetone is chlorinated. Bromodichloromethane is obtained as a by-product when 1,1-dichloroacetone is brominated.
