PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a membrane/electrode assembly for electrochemical fuel cells. SOLUTION: The process for preparing a membrane/electrode assembly, a continuously preparing process to form a membrane/electrode assembly, comprises (i) the coating, on a solid polymer electrolyte, a carbon fiber paper or a releasable substrate, of a layer of a composition consisting of (a) catalytically active particles, (b) an organic compound having a pKa of at least 18 and a basicity parameter, β, of 0.66 or less and (c) a polymeric binder, (ii) the heating of the above composition under a sufficient condition enough for at least 95% of component (b) to vaporize, and (iii) the placing of the above composition and the solid polymer electrolyte under a contact condition when the above composition is not subjected to a direct coating on the solid polymer electrolyte. The above cell is operable at a decreased gas flow rate, a relatively high current density and a relatively high voltage. |
