A preferred embodiment mattress (1010) for a bed is provided to support a patient. The mattress (1010) includes a plurality of air fluidized bladders (1022). Each bladder (1022) includes a fluidized zone (1028) having fluidizable material positioned therein. Each bladder (1028) further include s at least one diffuser (1036, 1038) configured to provide air to the fluidize d zone (1028) to fluidize the material.
