PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that the device is made high, and adjusting of energizing force is difficult by the reason of a spring vertically installed for energizing downward a retard roller against a separate roller, in an automatic sheet carrying device having a sheet carrying passage formed in a laterally facing U-turn shape as viewed from the side and the retard roller in a sheet supply part. SOLUTION: A frame 16 forming a guide surface for guiding a sheet from the sheet supply part to a returning part in the carrying direction is installed, an elastic member 46 supporting the retard roller 24 and acting in the direction almost perpendicularly crossing to the retard roller and a rocking member 47 formed in almost a reverse U shape as viewed from side are installed on the inside of the frame 16, the bending part of the rocking member is pivoted, one end of the bending part receives the energizing force of the elastic member and the other end presses the retard roller in almost the perpendicularly crossing direction to the acting direction of the elastic member.
