PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map data transmitting system and a transmitting method through which map data, that have a small amount of data and are especially suitable for the transmission via a transmission path such as a portable telephone and a portable terminal device, are easily generated. SOLUTION: A map data transmission system transmits a deformed map from a transmitting side device to a receiving side device. The system is provided with transmitting and receiving side devices. The transmitting side device is provided with transmitting side map font tables 7 and 25 which store map fonts having beforehand set shapes and map font codes corresponding to the map fonts, a deformed map generating means which expresses a deformed map to be transmitted to the receiving side device as the combination of map fonts and generates a map font code string corresponding to the deformed map while referring to the tables and a transmitting means which transmits the string to the receiving side device.
