The generator regulating device uses a signal correlated with the engine revolution rate as a control parameter and can be operated depending on the value of the control parameter so that the output power of the generator can be reduced on leaving a predetermined range of control parameter values. The generator output power can be reduced if the engine speed falls below idling speed. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of regulating the power of a generator driven by a motor vehicle internal combustion engine.
