Fibres based on acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers are coloured in processes wherein plastosoluble, basic, or modified-basic, acid or vat dyes or fluorescent brightening agents, and optionally discharge agents are applied to said fibres in the presence of compounds of the formula Y-X-R-CN where R is a 1-3C alkylene (straight or branched), X is O, S or Se, Y is H, -R-CN or an aliphatic hydrocarbon (straight or branched) which may contain O, S or N and may be substituted with an -X-R-CN group. The dyeings or prints may be subsequently steamed or heated. The assistants may be obtained by reacting, e.g. 1 or 2 mols acrylonitrile, allyl cyanide, a -methacrylonitrile or crotononitrile with 1 mol of water, alcohol, a polyol, an oxine, hydrogen sulphide or a mercaptan.
