PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for preventing the reverse rotation of an internal combustion engine capable of surely preventing the generation of the backfire even in the reverse rotation of the engine. SOLUTION: This reverse rotation preventing device determines whether the engine 11 is reversely rotated or not on the basis of a condition of a stator motor 26 and the behavior of a signal corresponding to the number of rotations output from a crank angle sensor 33. When the reverse rotation of the engine 11 is determined, an intake valve 20 and an exhaust valve 22 of the engine 11 composed of solenoid driving valves are forcibly closed.
