PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain leakage of a sealed fluid by restraining uneven abrasion of a sealed sliding surface brought about by deformation of a rotary side sliding ring 32 caused by radial directional pressure among differential pressure between pressure of a sealed space and atmospheric pressure. SOLUTION: In this mechanical seal having a space P containing sealed fluid existing on the outer peripheral side of a sealed sliding part S by both sliding rings 31, 32, an annular stepped part 32d for reducing the radial directional thickness is arranged on a back face side outer peripheral surface of the rotary side sliding ring 32 to set a position of the center of gravity 32G of mass of this rotary side sliding ring 32 so that the ratio (a/b) of the center of gravity of mass becomes 0.4<=a/b<=0.6. Thus, deforming force M1 for inclining in the depression direction by radial directional pressureΔP1 acting on a sealed sliding surface 32S side range A by the center of gavity 32G of mass to the rotary side sliding ring 32 and deforming force M2 for inclining in the elevation direction by radial directional pressureΔP2 acting on a bock face side range B more than the center of gravity 32G of mass, almost balance with each other to restrain the deformation of the rotary side sliding ring 32 to restrain the partial abrasion of the sealed sliding surface 32S.
