Ethylene-base copolymers comprising ethylene with an a-olefin, wherein the dyad chain distribution [EA] of ethylene (E) and the alpha -olefin (A) measured by <13>C NMR spectrometry and the ethylene content alpha (mol %) measured by <13>C NMR spectrometry satisfy the relationships represented by the following formulae (1) | (2): 0.7-2.8(0.5- alpha /100)<2>-|0.25(0.5- alpha /100)|</=[EA]</=2 alpha /100 wherein | | stands for an absolute value; and (2) 10</= alpha </=90 and the alpha -olefin has from 3 to 20 carbon atoms. Namely, ethylene-base copolymers having a high viscosity index and a low pour point and being useful as base oils or viscosity index-elevating agents.
