PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a fail safe when a cylinder discrimination is not established by the rotating phase slippage of a camshaft. SOLUTION: In an engine in which a cylinder discrimination and the detection of operating angle of a camshaft to a crankshaft in a valve timing control device are performed on the basis of the signal from a first crank angle sensor synchronized to the rotation of the crankshaft and the cylinder discrimination signal from a second crank angle sensor synchronized to the rotating of the camshaft, the cylinder discrimination is performed during cracking on the basis of these signals. When a normal judgment cannot be performed (S3-S33 and YES in S33), the camshaft is corrected to the most advance position when it is on the most lag side (S34-S36), and corrected to the most lag position when it is not so (S34, S35, S38) so that a normal cylinder discrimination can be performed, and the cylinder discrimination is then performed (S37).
|
