PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission for an automobile that admits of a shift during a stop and can ensure a smooth start with no fault and anomaly in a shift actuator. SOLUTION: A starting clutch 11 is disposed downstream of a secondary pulley 5 to permit a shift during a stop. A speed of an engine 2 under a criterion value Ne stops the operation of a shift actuator 7 to prohibit an improvident shift and to prevent an overload on the shift actuator 7 resulting from a pinch on a power transmission belt 6 by a primary pulley 4, and anomaly in starting resulting from a sag or slip of the power transmission belt 6.
