[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises an odourless, water permeable, water insoluble sponge consisting essentially of collagen fibrils, the sponge being substantially free of an acid having a dissociation constant in aqueous solutions greater than 4.90 x 10<SP>-7</SP> at 35‹C and a salt of such an acid. The collagen sponge may be made by swelling collagen fibrils in an aqueous solution of an acid or a salt thereof at 0-35‹C, the acid having a dissociation constant in aqueous solution greater than 4.90 x 10<SP>-7</SP> at 35‹C, homogenising the swollen collagen to form a uniform mass, shaping the mass into a desired form, and lyophilising the shaped mass to form the sponge. The preferred acid is carbonic acid. The sponge may be tanned by contacting with formaldehyde vapour at 20-140‹C and may be sterilised by exposure toγrays.</p> |
