Scum (1') is extracted and pumped (2) from the activated sludge tank (1) to the treatment vessel (4) for dispersion. Here it is subjected to intensive shear, comminuting it and releasing trapped gases. Preferred Features: The vessel has an adjustable-height holder. It includes dosing equipment for chemicals and/or natural products. Intake or supply openings include weirs. The outlet pump is integrated into the dispersion unit. A pump is arranged in the treatment vessel, in its outlet pipe or outside this vessel, to control throughput. A number of treatment vessels are coupled together using any combination of the shearing units identified. The unit, comprising treatment vessel and all its components, may be supported by floats and secured by ropes.
