<p>This invention relates to a surgical prosthesis and method of use. The hiatal hernia repair patch (9) is a ring (10) with an integral mesh (12) attached to and surrounding the ring (10). The ring (10) and the mesh (12) have a slit (14) therein extending radially so that the ring (10) may be placed about the esophagus (30). The ring (10) may be hollow or solid and is flexible so that it may be inserted through a small incision or a laparoscopic port into the abdominal cavity. The patch (9), including the ring (10) and mesh (12), is made as a one-piece unit and is made from polypropylene or other biocompatible material. In use, the ring (10) is placed around the esophagus (30), between the stomach (28) and the diaphragm (24). Next, the mesh (12) is stapled or sutured to the undersurface of the diaphragm (24), bridging the hiatal hernia defect.</p> |
