PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device necessitating no backlight and having an advantage of a thinner size. SOLUTION: Parallel rays of light are produced from the light emitted by a light source 13 and are made to irradiate a cholesteric liquid crystal layer 7 held between transparent electrodes 5 and 6 from the lateral direction. When no voltage is applied between the transparent electrodes 5 and 6, a focal conic polydomain texture is formed in the liquid crystal layer 7. Thereby the light irradiating the liquid crystal layer 7 is scattered and emitted from the transparent electrode 5 to the outside of the liquid crystal cell 8 (a light emitting state). When a voltage is applied between the transparent electrodes 5 and 6, the liquid crystal layer 7 gets into a homeotropic alignment state and the light irradiating the liquid crystal layer 7 goes straight on hardly being scattered. Thereby there is almost no light emitted from the transparent electrode 5 to the outside of the liquid crystal cell 8 (a dark state).
