PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave device that can enhance the steepness in the vicinity of the pass band in a filter characteristic without increasing a loss and can adjust the filter characteristic after electrode forming. SOLUTION: In the surface acoustic wave device, at least one interdigital electrode 2 is formed on a piezoelectric substrate, and a polarization direction in at least one gap between electrode fingers of at least one interdigital electrode 2 is made different from the polarization direction of a gap of the other electrode fingers on a same propagation path.
