The invention relates to a method for the production of an electron emitting cathode. The inventive method is characterized in that it is based on an emitting (20) material which is insulating or has a low electronic affinity and in that emission sites (261, 262) are defined artificially by localized creation of zones of high electronic affinity and/or conduction. Preferably, the density of the sites is predetermined, e.g. ranges between 10<8> and 10<13>/cm<2>.
