PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for specifying photographic conditions, for automatically specifying the photographic conditions from an image taken. SOLUTION: A workpiece 1 having bonded to one side thereof a seal on which a black rectangle and a square frame surrounding it are drawn is photographed by a color TV camera 2, and an area in which the rectangle and the frame are photographed is extracted by an image processor 3 from the image obtained. The image processor 3 then computes the size of the area in which the rectangle is photographed, the position of the center of gravity of the area, an angle which one side of the area forms with the transverse direction of the image, the average value of brightness of portions around the rectangle, the brightness Ymax which appears at the highest frequency within the frame, and the brightness Y10 which appears at the frequency closest to a tenth of the highest frequency. The computation results are displayed on a display device 5 and the installed position and angle of the color TV camera 2, focal position, and the quantity and irradiation angle of illumination are adjusted.
