PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler and an exhaust gas purifying muffler capable of muffling an engine exhaust gas of a diesel engine vehicle, or the like and of effectively cleaning it at a low cost. SOLUTION: These mufflers are used to muffle the engine exhaust gas that flowed into an expansion chamber 28 from an inlet pipe 12 and to separates fine particles from it by displacing plural stages of screen members 60 in the expansion chamber 28 formed in a casing 16. The screen members 60 each makes the exhaust gas constrict and expand and are provided with gas flow dividing means 70, 72, 74 for separating the fine particles.
