1,218,503. Thermoplastic resin compositions. DART INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 April, 1969 [15 April, 1968], No. 18945/69. Heading C3P. A process for incorporating additives in thermoplastic resins comprises (a) preparing a liquid formulation comprising one or more additives dissolved in a volatile liquid or dispersed therein with a surface-active agent, (b) mixing the powdered resin by spraying the formulation on the resin with continuous agitation to disperse the formulation uniformly on the resin surface without accumulation of excess liquid thereon and to maintain the resin free-flowing during the mixing and subsequent drying step, (c) agitating for at least a further 15 minutes, (d) drying and removing the majority of the volatile liquid from the mixture and (e) subjecting the dried mixture to high shear. Specified polymers are of ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, hexene, vinyl chloride and methyl methacrylate; and ABS terpolymers. Specified additives are antistatic agents, stabilizers, slip agents, anti-block agents, plasticizers, delustrants, flame retardants, fillers and pigments. Many suitableliquids, e.g. water, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones and esters; additives; and surfactants are specified and examples describe the colouring of polypropylene with concentrates prepared from polypropylene and liquid formulations comprising surfactants, mineral spirits and toluene together with (1) titanium dioxide and polyethylene, (2) carbon black and an amine, (3) cadmium sulphide and (4) phthalocyanine green; and a concentrate prepared from polypropylene and a liquid formulation of titanium dioxide, surfactant, silicone antifoam and water; and the colouring of polyethylene with a concentrate prepared from polyethylene and a liquid formulation of titanium dioxide, phthalocyanine green, benzidene yellow, mineral spirits and toluene. The compositions may be used in the manufacture of films and fibres. |
