PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a die holding device for a punch press not having a backlash in rotating parts and capable of conducting precise rotation indexing with rotating in normal/reverse directions. SOLUTION: An upper die holder 3 to support an upper die 1 of a punch press and a lower die holder 7 to support a lower die 5 are arranged up/down and freely rotatably, inner cylinders 19U, 19L are rotatably and in a zero clearance supported in outer cylinders 17U, 17L fixed to the punch press so as to constitute rotation support device 11, 15 supporting the upper die holder 3 and the lower die holder 7. The upper die holder 3 is supported movably up/down only in a zero clearance in the inner cylinders 19U, 19L. further the upper/lower rotation support devices 11, 15 have the same constitution. Further, the upper/ lower rotation support devices 11, 15 are arranged with an inner cylinder as a rotation shaft 49 and a control motor is arranged which has a brake device 73 to freely fix a rotation detector 69 of the rotation shaft 49 and the rotation shaft 49.
