PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preserving method by which the performances of a heat developable image recording material including image density can be satisfactorily retained when the image recording material is wrapped in a packing body and preserved in the state of finished goods. SOLUTION: In the preserving method in which a heat developable image recording material with at least one image forming layer containing an organic silver salt, a reducing agent for silver ions and a binder on the substrate is housed in an external packing body and preserved, the housed state of the image recording material satisfies at least one of the conditions A; 0.03-10% void volume in the external packing body and B; >=85% partial pressure of nitrogen in the external packing body.
