PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a time required for transfer of recording data when nozzles are to be driven in a rapid recording mode or a multipass recording mode by thinning out the nozzles. SOLUTION: When nozzle blocks are to be driven in the thinning-out mode, data indicating the recording mode and recording data corresponding to a nozzle to be used are sent in an IDATA signal by a printer body. A recording head creates a shift clock SCLK whose period is advanced in accordance with a thinning-out rate by a shift clock generator 5 and stores the recording data in an appropriate shift register 1 to the clock SCLK. The recording data corresponding to the recording element to be used is doubly stored in a part corresponding to a recording element not to be used.
