PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a surface-shaped signature, consisting of a plurality of signature layers, with mechanically high strength in a method for forming folded back portions closed with open ends in the process of folding the signature. SOLUTION: An unfolded division 41 and a division 42 folded in the longitudinal direction are formed, in the alternating order, at a folded back position 6 of folding layers 4, 5, of the signature.
