During normal operation different sections of the machine, e.g. feed roller, wind-up, operate at required speeds (va1, vs1). During a power failure their speed relationship is maintained for a period by an auxiliary power source as both speeds are allowed to drop according to a set program to new speeds (va4, vs4). When power is restored the speeds are again raised in a similar manner. An independent claim is also included for the required control installation incorporating a line voltage monitor, input arrangement for speed programs and connection to auxiliary power source. The power can be generated from the rundown of the highest inertia component or supplied by an external battery.
