The press has a straining basket (4) with at least two plates (11a,1b) with a central opening defining an internal volume and bounding a straining gap that acts as a liquid outlet. A straining worm in the internal volume of the basket can be driven to rotate with respect to the basket. The plates are held correctly positioned by at least one holding arrangement (45). A cam drive is associated with the plates for setting the straining gap.
