Key-less access control method e.g. for motor vehicle access authorisation

A method of operating key-less access control device for a vehicle (1), in which a transmission- and receiving-unit (2) on the vehicle side, outputs a request signal for actuating an enabling device, and waits for the reception of an answer signal. A received answer signal is evaluated in the transmission/reception unit (2) and with authorisation, a control signal is generated and is used to lock or unlock a safety/security system. The request signal as a result of an enabling event, is intermittently and multiply outputted and a portable encoder (5) transmitting the answer signal, is enabled or remains enabled, for subsequent unlocking/locking procedures, if within a given time period no answer signal is received for at least one discrete request signal.
