PURPOSE: A muffler for reducing low frequency booming noise when an engine idles is provided to effectively damp low frequency booming noise in idling while an air conditioner is turned on. CONSTITUTION: A muffler comprises: first and second wall members(5,6) dividing a cylindrical body(1) into first and second spaces(7,8) and a resonance chamber(9); an exhaust pipe(3) communicated with the first space for discharging exhaust gas from an engine to the first space; a first pipe member(10) formed in the first wall member for communicating the first space with the second space; a tail pipe(12) communicated with the first space and extended outside the cylindrical body; a second pipe member(14) formed in the first wall member for communicating the second space with the first space; a connecting pipe member(15) connecting the end of the tail pipe with the end of the second pipe member; and a hole(13) formed on the tail pipe for communicating the resonance chamber with the tail pipe. The exhaust gas discharging through the exhaust pipe flows into the first space. The exhaust gas is diffused therein, and the pressure of the exhaust gas is reduced. Noise is damped in the resonance chamber. The temperature and pressure of the exhaust gas are decreased while flowing into the second space via the first pipe member. Thereafter, the exhaust gas is discharged via the second pipe member, the connecting pipe member and the tail pipe. The noise of the exhaust gas is damped in the resonance chamber.
