1,203,033. Cooling metallurgical converter hoods. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 4 Oct., 1967 [4 Oct., 1966], No. 44324/66. Heading F4U. A pump 12 circulates water in a closed circuit containing the tube walls of a converter hood 1, a collecting drum 11 and an array 13 of cooling heat exchangers AX-FZ, the heat exchangers being provided with a by-pass 14 controlled by a three-way proportioning valve 21. The heat exchanger outlet line and the by-pass terminate in nozzles 20 and 24 which are directed towards each other in a mixing chamber 25. The valve 21 is operated by a controller 27 in response to pressure in the collector drum 11 to maintain pressure in the drum between two limits. If the pressure falls below the lower limit, the controller 27 opens a valve 28 in a steam supply line to a heater 29. As an oxygen lance 6 is lowered to its blowing position, a controller 30 which is responsive to lance position, and time devices 41-45 sequentially energize fans which are located to blow air over heat exchangers of the array 13. The controller 30 also operates a valve 31 in the oxygen supply line to the lance. The valve 21 has a by-pass 34 which is controlled by a valve 33 in response to heat exchanger outlet temperature in order to prevent that temperature falling near to freezing. During an inoperative period of the converter, the valve 33 may be held in its fully open position and the steam valve 28 placed under the control of a temperature responsive controller 32 which is normally responsible for operating the valve 33. Devices may be provided for controlling liquid level in the drum 11 and for preventing opening of the oxygen valve 31 if a sufficient number of heat exchanger fans fail to energize.
|
