A hinge, particularly intended for doors, comprises a centre section 2 and two side flaps 1, 3 hinged thereto on opposite sides thereof with the hinge axes parallel, there being provided means for fastening one of the side flaps to the centre section, said means being adapted, when fastened, to be broken upon application of a force which is greater than that encountered in normal usage but which is not sufficient to cause detachment of the permanent fastenings between the side flaps and the members to be hinged. This hinge permits a door to be opened in emergency the opposite way to normal. As disclosed, a double butt hinge is provided with a yieldable annular nylon bush 8, through which a screw 30 passes to hold the centre section and one side flap together; alternatively a split pin is used for this purpose. In one embodiment, Fig. 13, the free side flap 9 is received slidably into a backing plate 10 fastened to a door frame at a suitable angle, whereby the door may be released from its catch and/or bolt by sliding the flap along the plate before breaking the releasable fastening 8, (see Fig. 14, not shown). A manually releasable catch 17 prevents sliding in normal use. In this embodiment the doorstops may be fixed; in the first embodiment they should be removable. |
