PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester at a higher productivity. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a polyester by the polycondensatin of a product formed by the esterification of a dicarboxylic acid with a diol, the molar ratio R1 (diol/dicarboxylic acid) of the diol to the dicarboxylic acid charged to be subjected to esterification is set at 1.10 or lower, and water in an amount of 10 wt.% or lower of the sum of the dicarboxylic acid and the diol is added when the mixture of the acid and the diol is prepared, thus enabling a polymer having a high degree of polymerization to be obtained in a shorter time.
