PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem where a large memory capacity is required to perform area separation processing of multivalued picture data in a conven tional image processor, performing area separation processing which discriminates whether an object pixel area is a line drawing area, when binarizing and outputting inputted multivalued image data. SOLUTION: In the area separation processing, the object pixel area set to binary image data obtained by binarizing multivalued image data is compared with plural previously stored binary pixel patterns, and it is discriminated as to whether the object pixel area is a line drawing area, on the basis of the degree of similarity between the object pixel area of binary image data and each binary pixel pattern. This area separation processing is performed to reduce the memory capacity required for the area separation processing to a large extent.
