measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: invention is intended for determination of strength of hard, medium hard and soft grounds under laboratory conditions. Sample of ground in the form of right rectangular parallelepiped is compressed longitudinally by continuously growing force or with preset velocity of longitudinal deformation of sample under uninterrupted recording of longitudinal deformation of sample, value of compressing force and lengths of traces of sliding surface formed on faces of sample and its angle of inclination. Strength of ground is calculated as arithmetic mean of group of values of limit tangential stress computed at moments of either anomalous increase of longitudinal deformation of sample or growth of traces of sliding surface or anomalous decrease of compressing force by certain formula.
