PURPOSE: A control method for saving power consumption of a refrigerator is provided to automatically convert a run mode of a refrigerator by detecting a use time zone of the refrigerator through a photosensor. CONSTITUTION: A photosensor outside a refrigerator outputs an optical change signal to a microcomputer during operating of the refrigerator. The microcomputer checks changes of the signal and outputs a control signal to a drive unit in changes of the signal to run the refrigerator in a set run mode. In no changes in the signal, the microcomputer recognizes a low frequency time zone in use of the refrigerator and stops a cooling fan and a compressor. If indoor temperature is higher than set temperature, the microcomputer drives the cooling fan and the compressor until the indoor temperature falls down to the set temperature. The microcomputer sets a change cycle of the optical change signal depending on a time zone and converts the run mode by deciding the use time zone of the refrigerator.
